I knew Cliff as the Official Veterinarian for the New Zealand Racing Codes. Such was his passion for the horse and racing that this was a labour of love. Most of what he did in this role was voluntary, Cliff deriving more reward from the recognition of his scientific knowledge and skills than any monetary recompense. His involvement with IGSRV and ICRAV and particularly the fellowship with his colleagues in those organisations, gave him great pleasure. Cliff firmly believed in fairness and natural justice. In drug cases, he would only provide evidence that a chemical was a drug as defined by the racing rules at the time if he could establish that through study of the scientific literature or through his own research. His views on the efficacy of heptaminol are well known. Also a man of great integrity, Cliff absolutely ignored his knowledge of doping and doping control in his career as a successful breeder, owner, trainer and driver of standardbreds. His successes coming with the right horses and his good training skills. On the personal side, Cliff was warm, friendly and had a wonderful sense of humour. He will be missed by all who knew him.
